 FAQ

Eglum SpamSnare uses a combination of two spam blocking techniques. The primary technique is the use of an Anti-Spam Tag, with which the program sorts all received mail.

What is an Anti-Spam Tag?
The Anti-Spam Tag is an individual keyword chosen by you and requested to be included in the text or subject of a message by anyone writing to you. This will ensure that important messages will not be lost in the huge pile of junk mail you probably receive every day. Every time the program scans all the incoming messages it checks if the specific anti-spam tag is present. If this tag is detected, then the message will be added to the list of those e-mails that are definitely not spam (Tagged Mail).

This type of approach guarantees that messages containing the anti-spam tag are 100% spam-free. The presence of such a tag indicates that the author of the message is writing exclusively to you and this specific e-mail is not part of a mass mailing campaign. It cannot belong to such a campaign simply because bulk mailing programs do not have the option of attaching individual additions to specific messages.

How to choose an Anti-Spam Tag
The Anti-spam tag is not a password or a secret code. You can choose any anti-spam tag you like. It could be a word, a phrase, a combination of letters and numbers, etc. As you and your respondents don't need to memorize this tag, it is better to make it unusual, for example "atlantis1082".

How to inform your respondents about using the Anti-Spam Tag
1. Send out a message to all your respondents about how you use a special anti-spam program that requires everyone writing to you to include your anti-spam tag. You can also specify how a person may obtain your current anti-spam tag.
2. Place your anti-spam tag in your signature, which is automatically added at the end of your messages, with short instructions. For example:

anti-spam tag : atlantis1082
Please include this anti-spam tag in your text or subject whenever you are writing to me. Take into consideration that I am using an anti-spam program that classifies all mail without the specified tag as spam. You can simply use one of my last messages addressed to you. Just click on Reply to author in your mail program and your message will automatically include my anti-spam tag.

Most people use the Reply to author option when they respond to somebody’s message. As your text already contains your anti-spam tag (in your signature), your respondent’s reply will automatically include your anti-spam tag as well. Therefore, all mail that is sent to you through the Reply to author option will automatically contain your anti-spam tag, and your respondents won’t need to do anything more.
3. If you advertise your e-mail on the Internet, you should indicate that anyone writing to you must include your anti-spam tag in their message.
4. If you have your own web site and you place your e-mail address there, it is also very easy to notify your web site users about the anti-spam tag:

  • You may add a note asking your respondents to include your anti-spam tag in their letters to you;
  • You can set up the link of your e-mail so that whenever anyone clicks on your e-mail address, a template letter will open that already has the anti-spam tag inside the text or subject.
    5. If you receive mail from web forms, you may pre-insert your anti-spam tag in the subject of submitted forms.
    6. If your e-mail address is located in various places on your website, you should do the following:
  • Create a separate page where you indicate your e-mail address, along with the necessary information about using the anti-spam tag.
  • Everywhere you placed your e-mail address, change it to a link to the web page you have just created, containing your e-mail address and information about the anti-spam tag.

Free service: the Online Tag Keeper
The distribution of your Anti-Spam Tag is easy and does not require much effort. However, in order to make it even more simple and convenient, there is a free service offered to registered users of Eglum SpamSnare - Online Tag Keeper.

With this service your respondents can obtain your current Anti-Spam Tag at any time from the Eglum SpamSnare website (SUPPORT --> Online Tag Keeper). They just need to go to the Eglum SpamSnare website and enter your e-mail address.

Therefore, each time you change your Anti-Spam Tag, you don't need to notify all your respondents again. You just need to enter your updated Anti-Spam Tag in your profile that is created for each registered user on the Eglum SpamSnare website.

The whole idea of having to distinguish messages with your personal Anti-Spam Tag, as well as notifying all your respondents about the Anti-Spam Tag may seem troublesome. However, there are two major points that you should consider:
    1. The distribution of your Anti-Spam Tag, as it was described above, is very simple and hassle free.
    2. A little effort from your side pays off considerably by giving you complete protection from spam and an assurance that you will never lose valuable messages.
